Launch of Just Reinvest NSW’s Election Policy Paper

Justice reinvestment is a concept we ALL need to be more familiar with. It’s about removing emphasis on tough on crime to being smarter on crime. Justice Reinvestment is about diverting funds away from prison into programs to address the causes of crime in communities. Mass imprisonment is a burden on taxpayers. NSW currently spends around $652 a day or nearly $240,000 per year to lock up one young person, and costs are increasing. The latest figures in NSW show Aboriginal young people (who make up just 2.2% of the population) make up over half the juvenile detention population. In those communities where crime is occurring, the economic and social cost is high. We cannot afford to continue down this path. There is a better way to invest our resources. On Thursday 5 February 2015, we’re asking all sides of government to think differently as they head to the NSW election. Our key message to the government and the community is that there is a solution; a smarter approach that will reduce crime, reduce spending, and create safer, stronger communities.
