In New South Wales, Aboriginal young people make up just 2.2 per cent of the population but over half of all young people in our prisons. The over-representation of Aboriginal young people in the criminal justice system remains an ongoing and urgent concern. Just Reinvest NSW thinks there is a better way; better for Aboriginal young people and safer for the community. On 5 February 2015 Mr Mick Gooda, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner will launch Just Reinvest NSW’s policy – Justice Reinvestment: Thinking Differently for a Safer Community. The policy outlines how a justice reinvestment approach, supporting locally-driven solutions, can reduce crime, create alternative pathways for disengaged young people, and build stronger communities.
