Amnesty International head calls for Justice Reinvestment to reduce Indigenous imprisonment

Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty says the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in prisons is a human rights issue that can be addressed effectively through Indigenous-led solutions and a justice reinvestment approach. This 10 December, Human Rights Day, Salil Shetty is throwing his support behind Indigenous-led justice reinvestment initiatives by becoming a Champion of the country’s foremost Justice Reinvestment coalition, Just Reinvest NSW. Mr Shetty joins a growing list of Just Reinvest NSW Champions and Supporters calling for justice reinvestment as a solution to soaring rates of Indigenous incarceration in our country. Just Reinvest NSW is currently working with the community in Bourke to implement the Maranguka Justice Reinvestment Project. “What’s happening in Bourke is innovative on a world-scale,” said Secretary General Shetty. “Indigenous people there have taken the concept of justice reinvestment and adapted it for their community. “I had the privilege of visiting Bourke this year and witnessing the pioneering work of the Elders and leaders working on the Maranguka Justice Reinvestment Project with Just Reinvest NSW. “The over-representation of Indigenous people in Australian prisons is a human rights issue. “As we saw at the UN Universal Periodic Review of Australia last month, the […]
