On 22 September 2015, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, Govenor of NSW and Mrs Hurley hosted a reception in support of Just Reinvest NSW and the Maranguka Initiative. Mick Gooda, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and Champion of Just Reinvest NSW and Sarah Hopkins, Chair of Just Reinvest NSW, spoke at the reception. There were approximately 60 guests including representatives from supporting organisations, members, Champions of Just Reinvest and Members of Parliament. His Excellency delivered a strong statement of support for justice reinvestment: “Justice reinvestment has the potential to turn communities around… It is about making communities safer and stronger… By investing in crime prevention rather than prisons, communities will be safer… We know that the reasons young people commit crimes are complex and varied. Justice reinvestment offers a framework for tackling the challenging circumstances resulting in offending by young people by investing in long term measures tailored to local needs… Through a justice reinvestment framework, strategies can be developed that reduce crime and strengthen communities. It is a framework to build a better future for young Aboriginal people.”
