The NSW Government is yet to commit to investment in trials of justice reinvestment, however we are encouraged by the sustained commitment of key supporters, including Minister Hazzard (Minister for Family and Community Services, and Minister for Social Housing) and Minister Dominello (Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation) both of whom have visited Bourke and seen first-hand the exciting developments taking place. Just Reinvest NSW has been working with the NSW Government to gather the data needed for justice reinvestment in Bourke. In recent weeks, Premier Baird has appointed Minister Hazzard as a Cross-Portfolio Government Champion for Maranguka’s Justice Reinvestment Initiative for Bourke (read more below). In February this year, the Labor party made a pre-election commitment to invest $4 million in three justice reinvestment pilot projects to be run by non-government organisations across the state, and to set up a coordinating unit within the Department of Justice to research and monitor program effectiveness. Shadow Attorney-General at the time, Paul Lynch stated “Aboriginal over-representation in prison continues to be a stain upon this state and nation… NSW Labor believes that the policy and strategy of justice reinvestment provide a way of responding to this crisis.” The Greens NSW have supported […]
